Ben's Military History

Updated: May 17

Hello, friends! I have the honor of being a public servant my entire adult life. I entered the Navy in 1989 and was immediately sent to the Naval Academy Preparatory School. I went on to graduate from the US Naval Academy in 1994 and entered the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant.

I served a total of 20 years in the military, retiring from the Marine Corps in 2013. I was a Supply Officer for my career and had a quite eventful career! My primary occupation was as a supply officer, but my expertise included: budget planning and execution, logistics planning, base operations, policy development, training, and military justice. I did quite a bit of logistics planning and policy at progressively higher levels throughout my career. I deployed twice to Afghanistan (the attached pic is from our training before one of those deployments) and once to Iraq. During my second deployment to Afghanistan, I was the senior logistics adviser to the 201st Corps Afghan National Army, where we established several of the supply chain, logistics, and safety practices now used throughout that country. At my last duty station, I also headed a very successful effort to purchase 70 Swedish vehicles from Norway and to transport them out to California.

The one thing I was never allowed to do was to go over our given budget. Had I done so, I would have been subject to a court-martial for violating the Anti-Deficiency Act! Neither was I allowed to fail to succeed in our mission despite a limited budget. While we had our challenges, we always met our mission, often under budget. So, I find the Illinois government's current fiscal condition to be absolutely reckless! It seems the politicians and bureaucrats have forgotten their position of public trust. I want to bring us back from the fiscal cliff we are currently standing on and return Illinois to a AAA rating. I am open to working with everyone in the legislature to get us there, but I will not compromise a fiscally responsible policy that also lowers our taxes!

I look forward to the next post. Feel free to ask me questions and I will do my best to answer. I will also release a special announcement when the website is ready. Thanks!
